An interesting note: when discussing the Multitronic with the available expert, he mentioned that because it is a "shiftless" system (i.e. variable adjustment), Audi has to simulate a gear change with a slight pause in the drive.
I think this is another good example of a) our often misaligned desires for “faux-consistency” (i.e. the perfect round red tasteless tomato @ $1.99/lbs everyday) and b) the amount of time and money we can spend on attaining a desired perception of predictability and performance vs. the actuality of the product quality itself (i.e. the wholly grown and tasting tomato that is square, bumpy, wormy, buggy, and variably sized and priced ($1.20/ lbs in season vs. $6.99/ lbs when it ain't).
